Cover-ups & refreshing old tattoos at God Of Ink Amsterdam

Not every tattoo still feels like "you" after a few years. Maybe you've changed, maybe the design no longer suits your style, or maybe the tattoo wasn't done well technically. Fortunately, you don't have to look at it with dissatisfaction for the rest of your life. God Of Ink Amsterdam We specialize in cover-ups and refreshing existing tattoos, so that your skin becomes a work of art that you can be proud of.

When is a cover-up a good option?

A cover-up is a new tattoo placed over an existing one. This can be a good solution when:

  • The old tattoo is poorly placed or faded

  • The style or meaning no longer suits you

  • You no longer wish to wear a name, date or symbol

  • You are simply ready for something bigger and more powerful

Not every tattoo can be covered up the same way. Factors like color, size, placement, and how deeply the ink penetrates the skin play a significant role. That's why at God Of Ink Amsterdam, we always start with an honest analysis of your current tattoo.

First step: clear photos and an honest conversation

For a cover-up or restoration project, please send us clear photos of your current tattoo, preferably from multiple angles and in good lighting. We'll then discuss the following during a consultation—online or in the studio:

  • What exactly you want to hide or change

  • What styles you like (realistic, black & grey, bold, etc.)

  • How big the new tattoo should be approximately

  • Whether parts of the old tattoo may remain visible

We're always honest: if something isn't feasible without sacrificing quality, we'll say so. We'd rather have a realistic plan than a promise that can't be kept.

Smart design: working with the old tattoo, not against it

A good cover-up is more than just "putting something bigger over it." The art lies in cleverly using what's already there: lines, shadows, and shapes from the old tattoo can be integrated into the new design.

At God Of Ink Amsterdam we look at how we:

  • Dark parts can be processed into shadows

  • Lines can merge into new shapes

  • Old elements can camouflage into a larger whole

Sometimes it's necessary for the new tattoo to be larger than the old one. This gives us enough space to add depth, contrast, and detail. The goal is for people to no longer notice that there was another tattoo underneath.

Refresh instead of completely covering

Not every old tattoo needs to be completely covered up. Sometimes the base is good, but the lines have faded or the shadows and colors have become dull. In that case, a touch-up or refresh be sufficient.

We can sharpen lines, add extra contrast, and make colors pop again. This way, an old tattoo gets a second life without completely destroying your original design.

Patience, planning and aftercare

Cover-ups and restorations often require more planning than a "clear" skin. Sometimes multiple sessions are necessary, especially for large projects. During the design consultation, we explain:

  • How many sessions are needed approximately?

  • How much time should pass between healing

  • What you can do yourself to keep your skin in good condition

Even with cover-ups, aftercare remains essential. Well-healed skin ensures the best final result – especially when going from an old, bothersome tattoo to a completely new masterpiece.
